The Bonifacio Yacht Rally |
|
Dates: 28/08/2008 - 15/09/2008
Location: Sardinia
The Straits of Bonifacio and the waters of Sardinia and Corsica are justifiably renouned by yachting enthusiasts familiar with the area. Visit the ancient fortress city of Bonifacio, which clings to the top of chalky cliffs and is approached from the sea through a key hole entrance opening into the tiny harbour.
In Corsica a backdrop of high mountains with tiny ancient villages tumbling down steep cloud swept gorges offer world famous walks. Here one needs little imagination to conjure Crusader soldiers walking the same narrow streets. Skip between languages and cultures. The straits serve as the border between France and Italy, but it is more a border between two island cultures. Both are distinctly different from their respective mother countries. The laconic Sardinians are Italian only when it suits them and some of the proud Corsicans, it seems, would rather be completely independent of France. The natives of both islands, arguably, have more in common with each other than with the natives of either France or Italy.
After boarding in Portisco the two week rally visits a cross section of the area with the lay day race day programme which allows time to be a tourist in these diverse bays, towns, and coastal recreation areas, rubbing shoulders with super yacht owners and local farmers in the markets and marinas. The escorted event has many extras including post race dinners, all transfers, accommodation and local guides to assist with day to day issues and insure a carefree holiday on board.
