Naples is a lively and vibrant city, full of wonderful historical and artistic treasures and narrow, winding streets with small shops, making it worth at least a few days visit.Polluted, unruly, anarchic, deafening are all used to describe this city beautifully positioned on the Bay of Naples. Nothing here is orderly but Naples has a lot of everything. Ancient churches, a medieval university and eateries and cafes in profusion, noisy street markets and swarms of people on Vespas (often the entire family on one!) add to the general chaos. The zest and vitality of this city is unique. Tales of the Mafia, prostitution, and the black market sit alongside the utter fun that is also Naples.Naples is the third most-populated city in Italy and the biggest city in Southern Italy was named from the Greek Neapolis meaning new city. The close proximity of many interesting sites, such as Pompeii and the Bay of Naples, makes it a good base for exploring the area. Add to this the many interesting and historic places within the city.
Visit Pompeii: The catalyst that buried the entire city of Pompei in 79AD, is anything but extinct and has erupted about three dozen times since then. View the crater of Vesuvius, 1281 meters above sea level, by walking for approximately 45 minutes up the steep mount, as the road for vehicles terminates half way up this climb.Ancient writers mentioned Pompeii and the disaster that had befallen it excavations did not occur, however, until the eighteenth century, when Herculaneum was rediscovered by a peasant digging a well. Pompeii itself was found during an excavation that began in 1748. From that date on, excavations at Pompeii have continued sporadically. Portions of the site remain uncovered, and excavation and research teams are still attempting to reveal this mysterious city's secrets. The sections open to the public are extensive, and tourists can spend many days exploring the whole site.
Procida is a unique island of crumbling beauty and it is clear to see why it was chosen as a location for 'The Talented Mr Ripley' and ‘Il Postino’. Faded colour washed houses cluttered along the waterfront and the interior streets formed by high walls on either side, add to the secret nature of this island. Everything is hidden from sight behind the high walls, adding to the beauty and mystery of Procida. The island is very small and can easily be walked around in three or four hours.
